SSC CHSL (Combined Higher Secondary Level) Examination Overview:

The Staff Selection Commission (SSC) is an authorized organization under the Government of India responsible for recruiting efficient candidates for various positions in government departments and ministries. Each year, the SSC releases notifications for the recruitment of skilled applicants, with selections based on candidates' performance in SSC CHSL exams.

Selection Procedure: The selection process for SSC CHSL consists of two tiers of Computer-Based Tests (CBT) and a document verification stage.

  1. Tier I: This is the first stage of the examination. It comprises objective-type questions and tests candidates in English Language, General Intelligence, Quantitative Aptitude, and General Awareness. Tier I is the qualifying stage with a duration of 60 minutes. Negative marking applies for incorrect answers.

  2. Tier II: The second stage involves a descriptive paper. Candidates must write an essay and a letter/application within one hour. The minimum qualifying marks for Tier II are 33%. The paper can be written in either English or Hindi.

  3. Tier III: Skill Test/Typing Test is conducted for qualified candidates. For Data Entry Operators (DEO), a Data Entry Speed test is mandatory, while for other posts, a Typing Test is essential. The choice of language for the Typing Test is made during the application process.

Eligibility Criteria:

Essential Educational Qualifications (as of 07-03-2022):

  • For LDC/JSA, PA/SA, DEO (except DEOs in C&AG): Candidates must have passed the 12th Standard or equivalent examination from a recognized Board or University.
  • For Data Entry Operator (DEO Grade 'A') in the Office of Comptroller and Auditor General of India (C&AG): 12th Standard pass in Science stream with Mathematics as a subject from a recognized Board or equivalent.

Age limit (As of 01-01-2022): The age limit for the posts is 18-27 years (i.e., Candidates born not before 02-01-1995 and not later than 01-01-2004). There are age relaxations for various categories, such as SC/ST, OBC, PwD, Ex-Servicemen, and more.

Syllabus for Computer-Based Examination (Tier-I):

  • English Language: Spot the Error, Fill in the Blanks, Synonyms/ Homonyms, Antonyms, Spellings, Idioms & Phrases, Active/Passive Voice, and more.
  • General Intelligence: Semantic Analogy, Symbolic operations, Venn Diagrams, Critical Thinking, Problem Solving, Coding and Decoding, and more.
  • Quantitative Aptitude: Number Systems, Percentage, Ratio and Proportion, Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, and more.
  • General Awareness: Questions related to India, its neighboring countries, History, Culture, Geography, Economic Scene, and more.

Syllabus for Descriptive Paper (Tier-II): Candidates need to write an Essay and a Letter/Application.

Mode of Selection: Candidates are shortlisted based on their performance in Tier-I and Tier-II. Tier-III (Skill Test/Typing Test) is qualifying in nature.

Resolution of Tie Cases: In cases of tied scores, resolution is based on total marks in Tier-II, date of birth (older candidates ranked higher), and alphabetical order of names.

Application Fee:

  • Application fee is Rs. 100/- (exempted for women candidates, SC/ST, PwD, and Ex-servicemen).
  • Payment methods include BHIM UPI, Net Banking, Debit/Credit card, or cash payment at SBI branches.

How to Apply: The application process involves two parts - One-Time Registration and Filling of the online Application for the Examination. Ensure you have the required documents and information ready before proceeding.

Important Dates:

  • One Time Registration: To begin the application process, candidates must register online, providing their mobile number and email ID, which will be verified through OTP. Additionally, candidates must have a valid Aadhaar number or an alternative ID for verification.

  • Part-II (Online Application Form): After successful registration, log in using your Registration Number and password. In the 'CHSL - Combined Higher Secondary Level Examination 2022' section under the Latest Notifications tab, you can find the Apply link. Click on this link to proceed with the application.

Make sure to provide accurate information and upload a scanned color passport-sized photograph (20 KB to 50 KB) and a scanned signature (10 KB to 20 KB). Blurred photographs and signatures will lead to application rejection.

For candidates with benchmark disabilities, provide the Disability Certificate Number. You will also need information about your Matriculation (10th) Examination, such as the board, roll number, and year of passing.

Mode of Payment:

The application fee for SSC CHSL is Rs. 100/-. Women candidates and those belonging to Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), Persons with Disability (PwD), and Ex-servicemen (ESM) eligible for reservation are exempted from the fee.

Payment can be made through the following methods:

  • BHIM UPI
  • Net Banking
  • Visa, Mastercard, Maestro, RuPay Credit or Debit card
  • Cash payment at SBI Branches by generating an SBI Challan

Candidates can pay the fee online until the specified date (usually until 08-03-2022, 23:30). If opting for cash payment through SBI Challan, it can be done at SBI Branches within their working hours up to 10-03-2022, provided the challan has been generated before 09-03-2022, 23:00.

Final Steps:

After completing the online application, ensure that you have written your correct Roll Number on the prescribed places on the cover page of the Answer Book. Also, affix your signature and Left-hand Thumb Impression in the relevant columns in the Answer Book, as this is essential for evaluation.

Skill Test/ Typing Test:

Once you've successfully cleared Tier-I and Tier-II of the SSC CHSL examination, you'll proceed to the Skill Test/ Typing Test, depending on the post you've applied for:

  • Skill Test for Data Entry Operator (DEO): Skill Test is mandatory for Data Entry Operators. No candidate is exempted from appearing in the Skill Test. You'll be tested for Data Entry Speed of 8,000 (eight thousand) Key Depressions per hour on a computer. The duration of the test will be 15 minutes, during which you'll be provided with printed matter in English containing about 2000-2200 key-depressions to enter into the computer.

  • Skill Test for Data Entry Operator Grade-A (C&AG): For this post, you'll need to achieve a 'speed of 15000 key depressions per hour on Computer.' This will be adjudged based on the correct entry of words/key depressions as per the given passage. The duration of the test will also be 15 minutes, and you'll receive printed matter in English containing about 3700-4000 key depressions to enter into the computer.

  • Typing Test for Lower Division Clerk (LDC), Junior Secretariat Assistant (JSA), and Postal Assistant/Sorting Assistant: The medium of Typing Test will be Hindi or English, and you must choose the medium while filling out the online Application Form. Candidates opting for the English medium should have a typing speed of 35 words per minute (w.p.m.), while those opting for the Hindi medium should have a typing speed of 30 w.p.m. These speeds correspond to about 10500 key depressions per hour and about 9000 key depressions per hour, respectively. The speed will be adjudged on the accuracy of typing on the computer of a given text passage in 10 minutes.

Mode of Selection:

Candidates will be shortlisted for Tier-II Examination based on their performance in Tier-I. Normalized scores of the candidates will be used to determine merit and for final selection.

There will be separate category-wise cut-offs in Tier-I and subsequent Tiers for different posts, including DEO, DEO Grade 'A', and LDC/JSA and PA/SA.

Candidates will be shortlisted for Document Verification and Tier-III Examination based on their performance in Tier-I + Tier-II, subject to having scored a minimum of 33% marks in Tier-II. Tier-III Examination, which includes Skill Test/Typing Test, is qualifying in nature.

Skill Test in Tier-III for DEOs is mandatory for all qualified candidates. Typing Test in Tier-III for posts other than DEOs is mandatory for all candidates except those who are exempted from appearing in the Typing Test.

Resolution of Tie Cases:

In cases where more than one candidate secures equal aggregate marks in Tier-I + Tier-II, ties will be resolved by applying the following methods in sequence:

  1. Total marks of Tier-II Examination.
  2. Date of birth, with older candidates placed higher.
  3. Alphabetical order in which names of the candidates appear.
